The Tale of a Vintage Synth

Hey there, Reader

Hope you’re doing well!

I was just thinking about how amazing it is that music brings us all together, no matter what instrument we play (or even if we just love to listen).

With that thought in mind, I want to talk about a topic that's really special to so many musicians, regardless of what they play, and that is vintage instruments.

They’ve got this vibe that feels almost alive, like they’ve got stories to tell with every note.

I once played this 1962 Fender Precision bass in a boutique guitar shop. It was mind blowing, and I honestly felt like it was an entirely different animal than I was used to playing!

However, lately, I’ve been diving deep into one of the legends in the synth world—the Oberheim OB-X.

Even if you’re not a synth player, you’ve probably heard its sounds on some iconic tracks from the 80s.

This isn’t just another piece of gear; it’s a legend, one that’s shaped a lot of the music we all know and love. So, I wanted to share something cool with you—my latest YouTube video, "The Legend of Oberheim OB-X."

It’s a bit of a deep dive into what makes this synth so special. Whether you’re into synths or just curious about how those classic 80s sounds were made, I think you’ll enjoy it.

In the video, I talk about the history of the OB-X, its unique sound, and some of the famous tracks it’s been a part of. It’s fascinating how one instrument can have such an impact, and I’m excited to share that with you.

I’d love to know what you think! Shoot me a message or leave a comment on the video—we can nerd out over vintage gear or just chat about music in general.

It’s always great to hear from you!

All the best,

Amy S.

PS. I'm always looking for new musical ideas to explore with you, so if you have any requests you'd like to hear/see me dive into, I'd love to hear from you!!

What is SoundPaint?

SoundPaint is a long-time project I've been developing for the past 10 years. The dream was to build a safe community for creatives who want to explore their musical potential in a way that goes beyond traditional music education. And so in August 2021 SoundPaint Academy was created!

I deeply believe that music & songwriting flourishes when a musician is given the freedom to explore sound & creativity. This is where sound makes you laugh, cry, think, anything we humans can reach with our emotions, and express ourselves with color and light at a supersonic rate. Notes are our colors, and we use them to paint the full gamut of what we feel.

Feel free to follow me in these places...

THANK YOU TO ALL MY WONDERFUL SUBSCRIBERS!! YOU'RE THE BEST!!

HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY EXPLORING MUSIC WITH ME!

SoundPaint Academy

Hi! I am the creator and owner of SoundPaint LLC. Here we explore sound and sometimes write music! I help self taught musicians discover their confidence in their playing, and eliminate the fear that they're not musical by creating a foundation of intrinsic music theory, understanding of their unique music psychology and growth in their musicality.

And while that solitude fuels creativity, it can also turn into isolation. I get it—reaching out, networking, and...

Hey Reader It’s time for some tough love. If you’re serious about songwriting, you cannot keep tiptoeing around music theory. Imagine moving to a country where you don’t speak the language. Sure, you might scrape by with gestures and a phrasebook. But try asking for directions to somewhere specific—you’re stuck. Frustrating, right? That’s exactly what happens when you sit down to write a song without understanding music theory. Music theory is a language. A powerful one. And if you’re not...
